Not even halfway through The Persian Boy, and I already have to rec it.

Over a year ago, someone--was it you, cluegirl?--told me to read Mary Renault's The Persian Boy, which is a historical novel of Alexander the Great, told from the POV of Alexander's young male courtesan. So I picked it up (there's no lack of inexpensive used copies), started it, but after a couple of pages, noted, "Hmm, I'm not sure I was expecting this sort of style. I'll wait 'til I'm more in the mood for this kind of narrative."

So I've finally got back to it, and, ye gods and little fishes, me and my short attention spans--if I'd only read a couple of pages further, that first day. You want to know how much I love this book? I'm about a third of the way through it and, at the end of each of the past three chapters, I've had to stop, and lie back, and put one hand over my heart and fling the other arm over my eyes, and gasp and shed a few tears, overcome. It's so beautiful I had to stop. I mean, I'm not sure I even want to go on from this first third--it's as if I'm terrified it will become less perfect, not to mention that I'm sure that it will break my heart.

Slash fans must, MUST not miss this one. Give it at least a look--if it doesn't have you by page six, okay, you can go.
