My unpopular reactions to Up.

1. I couldn't see what Ellie saw in him.

2. The opening sequence was lovely, but anyone who saw so much as the movie poster could figure out the wife wasn't going to stick around for the larger section of the movie. So I knew not to get too attached or too deep into that part.

3. I felt nothing for Russell. The kid was annoying.

4. I felt nothing for the bird.

5. I would have given the bird to the explorer in a heartbeat. (Hell, he wanted to take it back alive anyway.)

So, go ahead, tell me I'm a heartless unfeeling iceberg.

HAHAHAHAHA ILU. Heeee. You're so awesome. Yeah. I wasn't really moved by it. It was cute enough. But I wasn't broken up by it all. I liked the dog.

The dog was GREAT. The animation was great. It's certainly acceptable Pixar. But it didn't move me in the way Pixar usually can.

Really, I would have tossed the little shit over the side of the porch and gone on with my day. Honestly, a man's *entire life's work* depended on bringing that bird back alive. The bird...was more important than someone's dream? The guy was actually an animal lover and probably would have * brought it back* once he said HAH IN YOUR FACE SCIENCE!

This is a weird phenomenon--every single time I see a Pixar preview I'm left staring at it thinking, "This looks utterly uninteresting." And then I go see it and I LOVE it. Except for this one. I thought the preview looked dull and it turned out to be dull, wow.

I haven't seen this one yet, but I fully support you in your going against the crowd-ness on it. That was me last summer after seeing Wall-E, which I didn't care for at all. You can't see it, but my fist is in the air in salute.

I've enjoyed all the other Pixar films, and I enjoyed Wall-E as well but I had HUGE get-past issues regarding the concept of a trash robot with human emotions. Like wha?

Heh, I just saw it today and yeah, I was a tad underwhelmed? It was enjoyable and cute enough but didn't really grab me like the other Pixar films.

I really loved the accompanying Pixar short, though. :D

Oh, GOD, I have to mention this--I didn't see the short. We got there late and got in just as the short was finishing, and I was breathing, "Oh, GOOD," because I have uniformly HATED every short before a Pixar film. I don't know why, but I'm writhing in my seat every time at how unfunny they are.

I'm sure I'll catch this one sometime and see if it fits the pattern for me.

3. I felt nothing for Russell. The kid was annoying. — I started warming to Russell when they made it clear that he wanted to earn the Assisting the Elderly badge because he hoped his divorced dad would show up for the ceremony. Plus, I give him points for figuring out the balloon-and-leaf-blower transport, and the payoff to the "SQUIRREL!" gag.

5. I would have given the bird to the explorer in a heartbeat. (Hell, he wanted to take it back alive anyway.) — I think the problem there was that Muntz was willing to separate Kevin from her young. Granted, he probably didn’t know she was nesting, and if informed of that might have been satisfied with tagging her for retrieval once her young were mature...but given the number of shallow graves he’d apparently dug, I’m not sure he’d’ve been that reasonable.

I just kept thinking: why couldn't this movie have been about a widowed Ellie?

It really, really bothers me that Pixar is putting out some of the most influential kids' movies of the day - and that they actually write some pretty good female characters - but out of ten movies only one can even marginally claim to have a female protagonist, and she shares top billing with her husband.

[info]amanuensis1

I'd like some female protagonists too. It's a pity that the formula is that girls will go see films about a boy, but boys won't see films about a girl. At least that's the party line that gets spouted.

You're a heartless unfeeling iceberg.

Happy now? :D

I saw it, I enjoyed it, but I also found it to be the most emotionally draining movie I've ever seen. I guess part of it was that I didn't have any preconceived notions going in, so I wasn't expecting Ellie and the death and all.

My biggest pet peeve was ... okay, so they can't have kids of their own. What about ADOPTION??? Why couldn't they have ADOPTED!!??!!?? It's not like it wasn't done back in those days or anything.

I thought it projected its plot everywhere, though that may have because I couldn't miss the mini-trailers that popped up all over television. But the bird was a total McGuffen, and I couldn't develop any affection for it.

Agreed. Moreover? The really unpopular opinion I have of it, that no one in my RL except the S.O. will agree with, is that there are virtually no women in it. It's this weird rewriting of 'family' with an old man and a little boy. Which is cool, actually, to redefine family, and actually detach women from their usual 'family' roles in pop culture, but also, besides Ellie who is not really in it? No women.

Not even the dogs, which - what? How did they keep breeding?

These are my questions. I admit I am unusually sensitive to stuff like gender portrayal in film, since it's my job to study such things, but even for me, this one hit me hard. Like, none, really? :/

Okay, yay, I've got that off my chest. Heh.

edit: Ahaha, posted before reading other comments, sorry. :) Agreeing with Delphi also that srsly, Ellie would have made a more interesting hero than the dude.

Disney channel had a cute segment where they went to a park with the voice actor for the dog and a real golden retriever, put a speaker on the dog, and had the dog "talk" to the kids in the park.

I'm sure it's on youtube, but "up" sucks as a keyword.

I remember laughing like mad at a scene in a family-friendly movie because I didn't understand it; I was probably about 5. When I was old enough to understand the sick horrible danger the characters had been in I was so chilled it was enough to give me nightmares.
