Aaaand another one. Snarky, chubby teen has a blonde baton-swirling best friend with a hottie, artsy older brother on whom MC is crushing. She also has a nagging, fat-shaming mother. She takes a job at a local health food place and starts losing weight for a role in Romeo and Juliet and the hottie artist's heart. When she hits her ideal weight, her mom takes her shopping for a new wardrobe. During the audition, she passes out and both the role and his heart go to a new girl. Lessons are learned. I don't remember how it ends. I read it in paperback about a decade ago in the US. The cover had a girl sitting on an apartment (?) roof in a city.

Yet another one was a book of short stories about teen girls. One involved a jerky guy who competing with a teen girl over finding beach treasures. (Just teeth or primarily teeth?) She came in with an entire shark jaw and won, and then gave it to him. One was about a girl's fear of diving and growing up. I read it in paperback about a decade ago in the US. The cover was primarily yellow.

Update: I found the second one! It's The Pig-Out Blues by Jan Greenberg.

Fic rec: The Trembling of the Migratory Birds [May. 16th, 2012|12:41 pm]

wildestranger
[Tags|, ]

I am reccing this story because it saddens me that it isn't better known. Perhaps the length has put people off, but really, that just means there is more awesomeness for you to enjoy.

The Trembling of The Migratory Birds by [info]eretria. Inception, Arthur/Eames/Ariadne, NC-17, 120000 words.

Here's why you should read this fic: The world-building is breath-takingly rich and detailed. The plot is complex and plausible, a case-fic that takes the potential opened up by Nolan's film and shows how it would actually work. There is hot threesome porn in various permutations. There is thoughtful and interesting characterisation from three perspectives, and a tantalising emotional plot to go with the heist-plot and the porn-plot. There is hurting and comforting. This is an example of the best things we do in fandom, the intelligence and curiousity we bring to transformative works. You should read this.

Links Roundup for 16 May 2012 [May. 16th, 2012|07:38 am]

otw_news

[otw_staff]
Here's a roundup of stories about the importance of fandom that might be of interest to fans:

  • Singer Alexandra Burke wrote about the importance of her fans, saying she can "fully appreciate the extent that 'fandom' as some people like to call it has really taken over. I am superclose to my fans (probably too close for it to be healthy lol) but I feel like they are this extended family of mine and they do so much for me, and there's no better form of honesty than if these guys don't like something/don't like some of my music - they won't dress it up in cotton wool - they will just tell you damn straight!" What's more, "[t]he last few years I think for me have certainly changed my perception on this whole 'movement', and no doubt that of label's and management who now have whole teams dedicated to ensuring that the fanbase is looked after."

  • Dr. Who fans, on the other hand, got a whole book written on their importance. SFX reviewed The Official Doctor Who Fan Club: Volume One and concluded that "[e]ven readers born many years after 1971 will probably experience a stab of nostalgia. You are transported back to more innocent times: before forum flame wars; before fandom had been commodified. This was a time when you could write to the Doctor and know there was a decent chance of getting a letter back; a time when Who fans had to make their own entertainment (one of Keith’s innovations was a 'lending library' of hand-made, one-off novellas of old stories, available to borrow one at a time). You may find yourself wondering if we weren’t better off back then."

  • If the discussion at Den of Geek is any indication, the above book will likely sell well. Contemplating what fandom did for Dr. Who, they note that "the market is completely different these days. Before the show came back, Doctor Who merchandise was a relatively small but lucrative area, mainly based round adult collectors. Now it's a huge and broad market, with magazines and toys selling large numbers in supermarkets to kids." They then attempt to quantify Who fandom, speculating "When you consider that Doctor Who Magazine's 2011 circulation was 30,682 these figures are impressive, but for further context we must ask: how many hard-core Doctor Who fans are there?...If you combine the highest figure from fan-sites' Twitter followers or forum members the total is roughly 145,700. This figure does show is that, even adjusting upwards (say, doubling the figure to accommodate variables), the kind of fan who is debating how much of Destiny of the Daleks was written by Terry Nation or Douglas Adams has gone from being the near-totality of fandom to being a minority (the average UK viewing figure for the 2011 series was 7.75 million)."

  • Certainly the U.S.'s SyFy network has realized the importance of fannish content to its bottom line. Their recent upfront presentation included various shows targeted at fans. Aside from creating two different shows aimed at collectors, there is a new project on cosplayers, Divas of Dress Up, and the "Untitled Mark Burnett Project...where fans of science fiction/fantasy books and movies compete to create the most flavorful and inspired dishes from the foods featured in the imaginary worlds that they love."

If you are part of Dr. Who fandom or want to share your fandom recipes, why not write about it on Fanlore? Additions are welcome from all fans.

We want your suggestions! If you know of an essay, video, article, event, or link you think we should know about, comment on the most recent Links Roundup — on transformativeworks.org, LJ, or DW — or give @OTW_News a shoutout on Twitter. Links are welcome in all languages!

Submitting a link doesn't guarantee that it will be included in a roundup post, and inclusion of a link doesn't mean that it is endorsed by the OTW.

Sigh. I can't believe I haven't finished a single fic so far this year. It's almost June, dammit.

The cap_ironman big bang is one again, but there's just no way I can commit to a deadline right now, I'm way too swamped with work for the next two months.

I miss writing. I feel like a part of my brain has been turned off, and I can't figure out how to turn it back on. It's very annoying.

You guys apparently thought crossover meme = let's play stump the Isis! So I mostly just waved my hands around and flailed at you. But if you are curious, these are my stabs at the requests:

Ladies No. 1 Detective Agency / Lord of the Rings
Master and Commander / due South
Ella Minnow Pea / Slings & Arrows
Pirates of the Caribbean / Sutcliff Book of Choice = Mark of the Horse Lord
Downton Abbey / Game of Thrones
Eagle of the Ninth / Harry Potter
Frontier Wolf / due South [this is probably the best of the bunch]
The Devil Wears Prada / Brideshead Revisited [Signe hates me]
Hornblower / Harry Potter
due South / Eagle of the Ninth

Well, I've certainly learned my lesson. Oog. And I thought I loved crazy crossovers! You guys are NUTS.

Book about London, written in the 1940s or 1950s [May. 16th, 2012|11:32 am]

whatwasthatbook

[Tags|, , , , , ]

This has been reprinted as a paperback fairly recently, but I can't remember any bibilographic details. The author looks at various parts of London as they were just after the War, and considers their history too. I remember that he worked for the BBC in the first days of radio. Two sections that interested me were the one on Westminster Abbey, and another where he says that he thinks high-rise flats are great and can't understand it when the housewives he talks to keep saying 'But there's nowhere for the kiddies to play'!

Any pointers would be much appreciated.

You guys? So my poor smushed big toe? My entire toenail now looks like I painted it Jötun blue. I kid you not. I am turning this color:

To say it is painful is an understatement. Noe and I are taking bets on how long it takes my toenail to fall off. D:

In Ascendio news--I know some of you are planning to buy a one-day pass. If you haven't done so, yet, there's a Google offer up for half-price on one-day passes for the con. You can find it here, but don't delay--they're only available for another day or so. So if you were thinking about going but can't pay the full registration price, this might be an option for you.

Also, for people looking for cheap accommodation, the Slash Suite has a few couches we're offering up for people to sleep on for a very nominal amount. If you're interested, PM me and we can talk details.

Oh, and we've concentrated the bulk of the slash programming on Saturday. Just so everyone's on the same page. :D

First, yesterday's event went well. Second, I've updated the faqs. Let me know if I could word something better. Third, does a known minion know the Touhou Project well? I had a fanfic sent in by an anonymous minion. I thought looking at the wiki for said entry would be enough, but I still can't make heads or tails of it.

TITLE:
PERPETRATOR: A new year means A new look DM-greyeyes-sexiness-XOXO
SUE-O-METER:BAD (bad)

FULL NAME: Hermione Granger, Story Joyce
SPECIES: witch
HAIR: originally bushy, “My hair is now tamed and it passes my shoulder a little bit. It's curly and I brighten the color. So instead of a dull brown, it's now a bright, little bit darker brown. Underneath my hair is a shiny black, and some of it is also on the top of my head (Just imaging her hair roots is black, and since her hair grew it's on the top. But it isn't much. If you don't get what I'm talking about, then click on the link at the end of this chapter).”
EYES: originally brown, “I finally had gotten my eyebrows done. They're thinner but not too thin. And I have some eye make-up on. It's a nice smoky brown with some top and bottom eye liner. Since my eyes are round I didn't put a design at the end of the eye. Plus it would look too much because eye liner is on top and bottom. I also have a light pink of blush on top of my cheek bones so it can highlight my eyes. And some nude lip gloss that taste like oranges.”
MARKINGS: none at first, she is rather plane, an ugly ass Christimas sweater that her mother got her and is now complaining about being ugly
POSSESSIONS: apple computer, a face book account, Ginny has her own owl despite the fact the Weasly family can't afford stuff like this. “I'm wearing a black tee-shirt with a long baggy vest, color grey, that has black buttons and starts buttoning at the mid of my stomach and ends at the top of my thighs. My pants are tight and the color grey. It have some holes, thread hanging out, and holes that still have some thread in it. I have a long heart shaped necklace that hangs to my mid stomach. And I'm wearing a black watch that has diamonds on it, on my right wrist, and a bracelet with hot pink studs on my left wrist. I have some leather black boots that goes up from my ankle 3 inches. And has a sliver buckle with a circle on it.” And... “I looked at my nails, they're French tips. The part where it's supposed to be clear has a little color of pink. And there's a cute design on my thumbs with some gems.” Let's just say there is more and Hot Topic is involved.
CONNECTION TO CANON: Hermione has a flash back of Ginny telling her to break up with Ron. Her mom complains about her lack of wardrobe. Hermione realizes she hasn't done the maintenance she used to normally do every three to six months. Her mother and she go on a trip that the Suethor lets the readers know that she skips and to where she is getting her trunk ready. They buy so much her mother's bags get stuck in the doors at the mall and her mother tells her how hawt she is. Third chapter is a link to her hair style. The forth chapter is more self-centeredness.
ORIGIN: Ron is a bad boyfriend and his sister Ginny agrees .She gets a letter from Ginny again berating Ron. She walks past a random blond and they have a stereotypical girly conversation.
SPECIAL ABILITIES: Hermione drinks a lot of orange juice because the Suethor loves it. Hermione actually cares about her looks.

NOTES: Three guesses who Hermione is going to be paired with. Also, on top of the fact we have a fourteen to fifteen year old planing on writing smut for their fic we have a Suethor who needs a lecture about internet safety. Particularly in light of the reason I've updated the faqs. And no... I didn't intentionally go and find a Suethor whose posted personal stuff to her profile. It just happened.

Childrens Book about Mythical Beasts + Ghosts [May. 15th, 2012|04:05 pm]

[thirteen_points]
[Tags|, , , , ]

Hi,
The book I am looking for used to be in my elementary school library, this would have been in the mid to late 80's. It was fairly worn by the time I read it so the book may have been printed around the late 1970's or so. Basically, it was a collection of different mythical creatures such as Bigfoot, Medusa and it also talked about ghosts, haunted houses and dinosaurs. The artwork in this book was particularly realistic, frightening and gory, it was essentially the main draw. I think it also had photos of 'ghosts'. I remember there being a few pages where you could stare at an image for 60 seconds or so (like a skull or a ghost) and then look at a blank space on the wall and see the image floating transparently in front of your eyes. Some of the artwork was similar to this: http://img829.imageshack.us/img829/8779/earlymanep.jpg but I've since discovered this is a different artist. I unfortunately cannot recall much more about this book other than the artwork being really incredible.
If anyone call help, I'd be really stoked! Thanks!

Interesting Story to Share.... [May. 16th, 2012|06:17 am]

"Could Lola Tasya Possibly be the Grand Duchess Anastasia?"

Found this article over at the Philippine Daily Inquirer online website.

It makes for interesting reading.  This writer's recollections of her lost grandmother almost sound like a novel and my imagination is caught, providing, of course, that this isn't just the best con job of all time.  And we all know it's been tried before.

Still, there is something sweet and sad about "Lola Tasya" - her memories of her four sisters and younger brother, the little details she gave away growing up in what definitely points to an aristocratic and privileged upbringing.  And it's fantastic that it coincidentally resembles what we know of the life of Anastasia Romanov.

We all know that the story of Grand Duchess Anastasia Romanov and whether or not she survived the massacre of her family by the Bolsheviks is a topic that has been hotly debated for decades.  We have had one "conclusive DNA test" after another.  Still, the questions this article raises are interesting, whether or not "Lola Tasya" is the Grand Duchess.

Who was Lola Tasya?  What happened to her Russian family? Answering that alone could be a book in itself. :)

LOL insert my two cents' theory here... )

I am in London! [May. 15th, 2012|05:03 pm]

I arrived safely earlier today and am happily and comfortably ensconced at my host's flat.

I'm going to use this journal as a bit of a diary of my trip so this will probably be more detail than you want, but in case you're interested, here goes (and this is also for my grandmother who is not on The Facebook).

My plane out of Columbus was a little bit delayed which made my connection at Dulles very tight, but I made it.  I've never been on a plane that big.  The food was surprisingly good...not brilliant, but not too bad.  Couldn't get comfortable, slept maybe an hour.  We arrived at 1030 this morning, London time.  Heathrow is fricking HUGE.  It felt like I walked for about a year before I got to immigration, then on to baggage claim where I literally walked up to the carousel as my bag sauntered on by.  Changed my US cash to pounds and was off to the Tube.  I bought an Oyster card and thusly was another of my irrational fears alleviated, namely that my debit/credit card wouldn't work.  It worked fine.  The kindly Tube employee who seemed to be there just to help confused out-of-town travelers helped me figure out how to get to Paddington Station without having to go up or down stairs with my heavy suitcase.  Would have worked if one of the connections wasn't impossible due to construction.  But I am resourceful!  I managed to get my ass to Paddington and then walk three blocks to my host's flat.

She lives in Westminster at the tippy top of this townhouse.  She'd advised me she wouldn't be there but a friend would be.  He was such a dear, he carried my heavy-ass bag up four flights of stairs although I could have sworn my host had told me there was a lift (after he left I checked and yep, there is a lift).  The wi-fi worked (this is of course crucial) and all was well.  Her friend left me the keys and was off.  She had emailed me a helpful list of where stuff was nearby...good Chinese, good fish and chips, supermarkets, bus stops, etc.  I set off for the supermarket to buy food for myself.  It's about a five minute walk to three different supermarkets including (swoon) Marks & Spencer.  Then I decided to hop on the 23 bus (which according to my Londoner friend Marie is The Best Bus) and ride it to the end of the line and back to see what was what.  We went past Trafalgar Square, Piccadilly, The Old Bailey, St. Paul's and lots more.  I saw tons of places where in the days to come I can get off and explore.  Public transport is so EASY here.

It rained off and on.  I took this suitably atmospheric Londony shot from the top deck of my bus.

I came home, got myself sorted, and went back out to get some dinner.  I was starving; I'd had a cup of yogurt earlier but that was it.  So I went the cliche route and had fish and chips with mushy peas for my first dinner; my host had recommended a good nearby spot.  It was delish.  I went across the street to another supermarket for a couple of things I'd forgotten (coffee, cream for the coffee) and now I am home and very tired.  But I've successfully stayed awake all day and will go to bed at a reasonable hour and ought to be nicely on London time tomorrow.  Yay!

[Current Mood |ecstatici'm a fucking genius]
[Current Music |All Things Considered]

I just had one of those labor-saving strokes of genius that I need to share with the world. Which is to say, the easiest method ever in the history of popovers.

Here is my basic popover recipe:

2 tablespoons solid fat (butter or animal fat (duck fat, mmm) or solid shortening)
3 large eggs, at room temperature
1 cup (250 ml) whole milk, at room temperature
1 teaspoon salt
1 1/2 teaspoons sugar
1 cup (140 g) all purpose or white whole wheat flour
1 tablespoon vital wheat gluten

This tactic assumes you own a wand blender and a wide-mouthed quart Mason jar and a microwave. If not, just make the popovers the way you normally would--or if you are missing the wand blender but have a normal blender, you can melt the butter in a different container and use the normal blender.

About an hour or two before dinner, take your Mason jar. Put the butter/whatever in it. Put it in the microwave and melt it. (If you are making Yorkshire pud and are waiting for the roast to be finished before you add the fat, skip this step for now, and stir the fat in before you bake the popovers.)

Add the milk, eggs, salt, and sugar to the butter in the Mason jar (or blender)(or just put them in the blender if you are adding the fat later). Do not put the eggs directly into the hot butter before diluting it with the milk. Otherwise you will have scrambled eggs, which are nice, but not popovers.

Whiz them all up with the wand blender.

Add the flour and the wheat gluten.

Whiz that too, until you have a nice smooth batter.

Let the batter sit on the counter until dinner is nearly ready. If you are roasting something at 400 degrees, you're good; otherwise preheat your oven to 400 (F). (200 C)

Liberally grease 9 cups of a 12-cup muffin tin, or if you are making Yorkshire pud, drizzle a little of the fat from the roast into the bottom of the cups. If you have one of the giant-sized six muffin muffin tins, then you will have bigger popovers and they need to bake a little longer.

Using silicon cups for this results in popovers without stumps or a lot of loft, as they just levitate themselves out of the super-slick cups entirely. They still taste good!

If you are using fat from the roast you're making, add it now and stir it in.

Divide the popover batter between the nine greased cups. You can just pour it from the blender or the Mason Jar.

Stick in oven. Do not peek! If you open the door before they are set, they won't rise properly.

Bake for 35 minutes or until deep mahogany brown.

Pull pan from oven. Tilt popovers in cups, or remove them to a rack or basket. Pierce each one with a bamboo skewer. (careful of the steam!) The purpose of these two procedures is to (a) prevent them from getting soggy and (b) prevent them from collapsing.

Eat.

However you meant to eat them. Do not plan on leftovers.

Wash your one. dirty. dish. Oh, and the wand blender, sure. And the muffin tin. But that was inevitable.

ETA: Nota Bene

For even more loft in your popovers, preheat the muffin tin with the grease in it in the 400-degree oven for a few minutes before pouring the batter in. This is a bit tricky, though, and can be skipped.

Professor Stalling [May. 15th, 2012|04:53 pm]

[Current Mood |nervousbreathing]

Master, bless.

My most precious ones,

after a few days of stalling relaxing (my back is healing well) and nesting (straightening out the dungeons a bit, reorganizing a few shelves worth of books, adding more interfaith/peaceful touches to the walls) and gardening (the yard was turning into a spring jungle), I am finally finishing seventh essay.

Mercy. Once I get going, equanimity will re-establish itself.

Relax, relax, relax...

I have to say that seeing green leaves on the trees outside my window is most soothing.

A little music, a few deep breaths. I can do this. I believe I am more afraid of the outcome than the process... Who am I to be doing this? is the thought I hear. From Awareness comes the reply, Let go of all that.

Logospilgrim, the quiet professor

where to begin. because literally the only good scene was with Georgina and it's only good if you don't have to think about context.

And now, the May 2012 current projects post, which makes me a little sad, because I made the April post from Cat's place in Maine, and I am not in Maine now. Oh, well. This is the post in which I tell you what I'm working on, and you finally understand why I don't have time for tea. To quote myself, being too harried to say something new: "These posts are labeled with the month and year, in case somebody eventually gets the crazy urge to timeline my work cycles (it'll probably be me). Behold the proof that I don't actually sleep; I just whimper and keep writing."

Please note that all books currently in print are off the list, as are those that have been turned in but not yet printed (Blackout, Ashes of Honor). The cut-tag is here to stay, because no matter what I do, it seems like this list just keeps on getting longer. But that's okay, because at least it means I'm never actively bored. I have horror movies and terrible things from the swamp to keep me company.

Not everything on this list has been sold. I will not discuss the sale status of anything which has not been publicly announced. Please don't ask.

What's Seanan working on now? Click to find out! )

That's never a term I thought I'd apply to Benedict Cumberbatch, but after seeing this link on [info]sarren's LJ, I WILL HAVE TO REVISE MY THINKING ON THIS ISSUE. I kind of love that there's a touch of the boiled lobster about him (though it may just be the colour balance on these particular photos) - I wouldn't think he'd tan terribly well. And you know, as much as I'd like to perv over him, I can't help looking at that last photo and thinking ahahahaha, he is SUCH a loveable dork. :D

ETA: Oh my god, a friend just pointed out the "Mr Cumber Butch" title, which I totally missed in my contemplation of his pecs. AHAHAHAHAHA.

I like how New Gmail is not only hideous but has begun hiding emails from me. It'll tell me I have two or three new emails in my inbox, but they won't appear until I log out and log back in. Also, it'll say I have thirty emails in a thread, show me five, and then only show me five more when I've deleted four of those.

Stay awesome, Google, you just keep fixing things that ain't broke.

But thanks to everyone who congratulated me on getting The City War picked up by Riptide :)

Apparently, due to my inability to count past ten, I made a mistake when posting the Dead Isle index pages; I thought I had twenty six chapters plus epilogue, and it turns out I only had twenty five. SO! Chapter Twenty-Five is posted, and also The Epilogue is posted, because leaving that to its own day would just be cruel. And we're done!

(Not really. If you still want to comment, please do; I'll be working on rewrites for a while yet.)

Thank you all so much for all you've done in the editing process, and any crankiness on my part you may have had to put up with :) It's been awesome.

A book of tales, and two tales [May. 15th, 2012|09:35 am]

Hi! I'm looking for a book that I read 5-7 years ago. It was orange (I think) and a hardcover. I think it was of Irish fairy tales, and the one I can remember the most has a man marrying a fairy (princess?), only to be told that she'll always long for the fairy world unless he loves her unconditionally. He thinks that he does love her, but she keeps trying to escape back to the fairy world, and he keeps retrieving her (I think) until one day he realizes how much happier she would be back in fairy land, and he lets her go. This act of letting go turns out to be the proof that he loves her unconditionally, and she forgets all about fairy land, and becomes a mortal, happy to be his wife. Either the book, or just the fairy tale would be helpful.

The other was a story that could have been in the same book, though. I'm not sure. It is similar to the story in The Brother's Grimm, but I'm pretty sure I read the story before the movie came out/before I saw it. Anyway, you have a rich lady who treats other's poorly, when a "gypsy" (exact wording, I think) comes to town wearing a lovely cloak. The rich lady demands to have the cloak, and so she steals it, but the original owner puts a curse on it (maybe?) and soon there's smallpox or something spreading throughout the rich lady's kingdom, and she loses the beauty she's so proud of to the pox. Again, I'm pretty sure I read this before The Brother's Grimm was made.before I saw it, so it's not from that.
