-I have no proper con report for Azkatraz, as the gist of it goes, "Glomped this person, glomped that person, glomped those people," and has no anecdotes of crazy doom to entertain you. Plain, delightful fun that does not make for clever blog posts. Not that I'm complaining in the least. Those of you who made my weekend awesome, you know who you are.
-I did remember that it was Harry's birthday yesterday. But when it came time for cake, I was craving an egg tart. If I sang over it, that counts, yes?
-In my travels I saw some in-flight films, among them Monsters vs. Aliens. There were some joke-went-on-too-long, they're-pausing-too-long-for-audience-reaction flaws, but it was still oodles of fun and my favorite new oath is Hugh Laurie as Mad Scientist Cockroach Guy (still the consummate gentleman) crying, "Hawking's Chair!"
-Anime series I am currently giving a try: Monster. Tortured ethical protagonist. Ristorante Paradiso. Cute gentlemen waiters of middle age in glasses. Variety is important.
-Why I have not yet finished watching Avatar: Because there's a large joy-post coming shortly to celebrate my love for it before I reach the end. |

Last night I dreamt I was in an intense sexual relationship with comedienne Lisa Lampanelli. I was trying to tell her that her I didn't care for her humor all that much--too many dumb puns--and that I wanted us to be taking more precautions about STIs, but I...couldn't talk much at the time and that's all I'll say about that.

Anyone have recommendations for an energy bar that actually tastes like dessert? 1. I just want something to carry in my purse while travelling, not to sustain me on a 10k marathon. 2. Taste is priority. Clif Bars taste like cardboard, granola bars are bone-dry, chewy granola bars are sickeningly sweet. 3. Ideally it will serve two purposes: it'll cure hunger pangs if I'm a couple of hours away from a meal, and it can also function as dessert.
I guess I want a delicious chocolate brownie (or cookie or cake slice) that isn't just a straight sugar hit. Am I going to find anything like that in energy bar form? |

Why do nudists advocate nudism?
It's not, I hope, because that way they get to LOOK AT NEKKID PEOPLE ZOMG. It's because they think the cultural taboos on nudity are silly. Who decided what body parts we must cover up? Why are bare buttocks obscene, and bare feet are just feet? Why do some cultures think it's immodest to expose one's hair? Are certain parts sexual only because we've fetishized them to be so? Do we like it better because we have?
If these parts were not taboo, would it be taboo to touch them? To exist in a polite society we have a standard that people are generally not touched without their consent. But we seek that consent often. We extend our hands for others to take them and shake them. We open our arms and lean in for a hug. During meaningful conversation, we seek to deepen communication by reaching to touch one's arm, one's shoulder. We are a society that does touch and considers it acceptable to do so as long as the other person sees it coming, does not withdraw or speak against it, and as long as the touch is on a body part not considered taboo.
So what if we took the taboo off body parts?
If I were out in public with you and you were someone I knew and trusted and you ran your fingers through my hair, I would be in touch-related ecstasy. I would sigh, "Ooh, do that some more," and if you continued, no one would run over and arrest us. They might think we're odd, but because you are not touching a body part considered naughty or dirty, we could have a field day. Fondle my breast or buttock or genitals in public, however, even if they're covered with clothing, and there will be cries of, "Stop that! There are children here! You can't do that in public! Etc.!" Why is that obscene, but the other is not?
If I proposed that we do a social experiment where we treated the public touching of sexual body parts with the same politeness we do non-sexual body parts, would people think that was interesting? Refreshing, liberating? They might. Could there be disapproval? What about people who did not want to participate? Would they fear I might label them as "hopelessly stuck in society's arbitrary rules," and be unhappy at such negative labelling? Might people think I just wanted to get my hands on their naughty bits?
They might. I would be hesitant to propose such an experiment. |

1.The subject line in the spam email was Two asian girls inserting fish in c**t. (They spelled it out.) And I said, "You know, I might actually like to see that. Because yes, I have goldfish!porn fantasies! And yet I know that whatever link you have in that email, it is not going to take me to a site where I can actually view two women of Eastern origin engaging in goldfish bestiality--it'll just sell me shares in a Nigerian diamond mine or put malware on my computer. Go back to subject lines about penile enhancement products and STOP TEASING ME."
2. I have learned that the phrase "Who's your daddy?" means something different than I thought it did. I thought the question implied, "Please tell me the name of your father, because when I am finished doing whatever it is that is impressive here, I will then seek him out and demonstrate how very superior I am to him, thus impressing him as well." I have discovered (not from real life! From a comedy routine) that this phrase may be uttered by men in the midst of copulation, which at first fit my expectations--I mean, maybe he wants to go to her father and ask for her hand in marriage or something? But then I discovered that a man asking this question is expecting an answer along the lines of "You are, dearest," which had me shrieking EWWWWWWW!! Oh, for the days when I lived in ignorance. *shudders* And they think slashers are weird.
3. I would make a poor vegetarian. I hate beans. I don't mean that they're vile or that I gag if one passes my throat, I just hate the way they're expected to rise to the occasion and function as meat substitutes. They're boring. They aren't tasty; who the bleep is promoting these as tasty? They're flavorless blobs of paste. And this is coming from someone who likes to eat plain raw tofu by the cube. Yes, there are exceptions; I count limas as vegetables rather than beans because they have that strong cabbage-y smell and flavor, just like broccoli and cauliflower and I like all of those. And a few dishes have squeaked by my radar; that black-bean-and-corn-and-pepper-and-spicy-oil dish manages to combine two of my "blah" vegetables (beans and corn) and transform them into something yummy (but that's mostly the spicy oil that does the trick). But the next person who tells me I can give up meat and get all the protein I need from beans will get hit. Grr. *orders another bowl of Coney Island chili without beans*
This post will either generate a host of "no, really, these are good" bean recipes or opinions on goldfish bestiality. I welcome both. |

I got a package of fabulous chocolate in the mail yesterday that had no gift card in it, which did not stop me from eating the chocolate even as I hunted for the gift card--okay, the box's country of orgin suggests to me the probable sender, but still.
3. It occurs to me that if Christopher Eccleston's Doctor were to meet a slightly older-or-younger version of himself, and the two of them were to make a Captain Jack Harkness sandwich, the pairing would be called Nine/Jack/Nine, which, since I am likely the only one on my flist who gets why that is amusing to me, will net you a drabble, pairing of your choice, if you can tell me the reference. |

Because of the whirlwind of OotP and Sectus and DH and Prophecy and deletegate but we'll pretend for a day that's nothing to do with us shall we I haven't posted any kind of trip report on the two conventions, and at this point I'm probably not likely to so I'll summarize by saying I had a fabulous time, I saw and fangirled so many wonderful people, and I miss London and Toronto and my fellow fans terribly much (food! sights! slash!). Pretty much what everyone else had to say.
I've had someone ask if I would post the drabbles that I wrote at the Prophecy Snarry meet-up or ask the recipients of them to transcribe them, and in answer, while I might try to reconstruct them at some point (I made a quick list of what I'd written, the next morning), they were meant to be gifts without obligation to their recipients. So, no, I won't say here who all got one because, as I said, gifts without obligations. ^_^
However, I should have post-DH smutfic to post in a few days. And I won't tell you the names of my betas, either, so you can't pester them to hurry.

Aw, I got the sweetest virtual gift from an anonymous sender--milk and cookies! Thank you for those, whoever you are! *nom nom nom nom*
I made an update and a bit of an overhaul to my website last week--I still have the same aqua/teal theme (familiarity is comforting), but the page featuring my HP fanfiction is now sorted in the order in which I wrote stuff, most recent to earliest (most recent at the top of the page). Plus I've eliminated the "shorter fics/full-length fics" division and just put a word count. I figure this is good for those who say, "Show me the stuff that hasn't been jossed, that's written more recently when the writer has (one hopes) improved her craft," and also for those who say, "Give me the earlier stuff, when the writer was new-fandomed and eager and still full of fresh ideas."
One of these days I'd like to make a page which sorts the fics by pairings as well, but, eef, not this week. Too tired.
(I'm still using Netscape Composer to make and update web pages. Wonder how long I can go on doing that.) |

A few endorsements:
I was directed to Least I Could Do, an online comic strip, (here, start with yesterday's rather than today's; it's funnier and a perfect example of the humor level) just yesterday, and already I've gone through three years of the archive. It's hilarious. Somehow the writer has created a sexist pig of a protagonist who gets all the women he pleases and maintains a kind of naïve charm despite his loathsome qualities (sexist, looksist, sizeist, selfish)--but, hey, it's a comic strip. The artist changes twice during the run of the strip and each change was a bit of an adjustment for me, but I grew used to the new styles. Watch as Rayne is denied his request for a female Swedish exchange student to do his housework and then sulks, "I admit I'm a little disappointed with IKEA's customer service."
The Astonishing Life of Octavian Nothing, Traitor to the Nation, Vol. 1: The Pox Party, with its lengthy title, is billed as Young Adult fiction, but I suspect there was debate about that classification. Yes, the protagonist begins as a child, but so was Pip in Great Expectations--nothing YA about that book, last I checked. Octavian claims to be the son of royalty, surrounded by professorial types who bear numbers instead of names, incorporated into their experiments like any fish or bird. What gets me about this book is how Octavian's circumstances are laid plain for the reader, and yet how easily the reader fails to recognize how simple it is. No, I can't say more; just read it. Don't read the reviews on Amazon.com either; they spoil too much.
Also, isn't this pretty?

I'm tempted, but it would just take up space. Still, pretty. |

I consider my end-of-year holiday spirit to be secular, but I still have a Christmas tree and watch Rudolph and the Heat Miser and say "Happy Holidays" to shopclerks and drop money in the Salvation Army buckets and gift exchange with a few friends. It's that time of year and it gets to me in a good way. (One of my favorite "let's MSTy Rudolph" moments is when Burl Ives's talking snowman says, "Ah, I love this Christmas-y time of year," to which I deadpan, "So, that'd be...Christmas.")
So I thought I'd appeal to the holiday spirit of everyone on my flist, because we mostly have the same agenda as far as fandom things go, don't we.
In just a day, a number of holiday fic'n'art fests will begin posting their offerings. You know which ones these are. These are the ones you've all been working on since September, the ones that have meant October and November are kind of a dry spell of fic postin's before the deluge of December.
You're probably excited. You may even be a little intimidated by the prospective glut.
So here's my suggestion for the holidays: Give feedback.
If you read, and you like what you read, tell the author so. If an illustration makes you say "wow!", tell the artist. Doesn't have to be long. Doesn't mean you have to read everything. By all means, stick to fandoms and pairings and ratings that please you. Because, yeah, there's going to be a lot of stuff out there.
Stuff that everyone's been designing and working on for months, in some cases. There are novels and comics and shorter pieces and one-shots and they're all going to be debuting at a remarkable rate, and while you may not get to everything you want, it'd be great if you dashed off a bit of feel-good for those pieces you do look at and like. It'd be a pity if feedback got lost in all the volume, because these fanworks have been what a lot of folk have been producing instead of other, quick fix fic that they could have cross-posted everywhere under their own names.
I'm not doing this for me--seriously, I'm not. I've only got two pieces out there myself and I couldn't be this baldly self-agenda'ed; that's just not me. And I have a fondness for the occasional anonymous fic post; lets me see what people aren't afraid to say to me when they don't know it's me. (Assuming they don't guess the author in two seconds flat. I'm so bad at guessing, myself, plus I don't go into these things with a "let me see if I can disguise my style!" plan.) But there are people out there with four, five, more. And some of them are YOU. Think about how feedback makes you feel and how nice it'd be to have someone say, "My fandom world is better because this story was written and I got to read it."
So, give feedback for the holidays. And if you want to relieve some of that post-holiday downer biz, go back after the reveals and look for authors' names that you like but whose stories you skipped on the first go-round because the pairing or premise didn't get your attention.
It's better than fruitcake, and it's always the right size. ^_^ |
